APPROPRIATION FOR CYCLOTRON (10) On January 27 (Minutes, page 709) the Board of Trustees authorized the construction of a new cyclotron by the Department of Physics for its researches and those of other departments whose scientific work requires the use of such equipment, and approved a program for assignments of funds as follows: From the Graduate School Research F u n d : 1939-1940 $17 500 1940-1941 6 500 From the General Reserve F u n d : 1940-1941 7 5oo Total $31 500 In making up the operating budget for 1940-1941, reductions and other adjustments were necessary at various points to bring it into balance with the estimated income. This included a reduction ($6,500) in the Graduate School Research Fund for 1940-1941. As an offset, I recommend that the Graduate School be relieved of making an assignment of $6,500 from its 1940-1941 Research Fund for the construction of the cyclotron, as contemplated in the original program, and that this appropriation be made from the General Reserve Fund, as it is a non-recurring item. This will make a total of $14,000 to be appropriated from the General Reserve Fund, and I recommend that this appropriation be made at this time. O n m o t i o n of M r .
