BOARD OF TRUSTEES MATTERS PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT WILLARD

The Board considered the following matters presented by the President of the University.

APPOINTMENT OF DR. C. E. McCLUNG AS VISITING PROFESSOR OF ZOOLOGY (1) A recommendation that Dr. C. E. McClung, Head of the Department of Zoology at the University of Pennsylvania, be appointed Visiting Professor of Zoology for one year beginning September I, 1940, at a salary of $7,500.

On motion of Mr. Jensen, this appointment was made as recommended.

APPOINTMENT OF ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR L. P. G. PECKHAM (2) A recommendation that Dr. L. P. G. Peckham, Assistant Professor of French at Brown University, be appointed Associate Professor of French for one year, effective September I, 1940, at a salary of $4,300. O n m o t i o n of M r . J e n s e n , t h i s a p p o i n t m e n t w a s m a d e a s r e c o m mended. APPOINTMENT OF DR. MILAN V . NOVAK AS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF BACTERIOLOGY AND PUBLIC HEALTH (3) A report of the appointment of Dr. Milan V. Novak, of the University of Minnesota, as Associate Professor of Bacteriology and Public Health in the College of Medicine, at an annual salary rate of $4,000, effective April 15, 1940. O n m o t i o n of M r . J e n s e n , t h i s a p p o i n t m e n t w a s m a d e a s r e c o m mended.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR J. H. BARTLETT

(4) Associate Professor J. H . Bartlett was granted a sabbatical leave of absence for the first half of the academic year 1940-1941. H e has requested that he be given additional leave without pay, covering the second half of the year, in order that he may devote the full year to his studies in the field of biophysics. With the approval and advice of the Graduate School Research Board he has applied to the Rockefeller Foundation for a grant to aid him in these studies. Since it was necessary for him to have approval of his request before applying for the grant, I authorized the extension of his leave under the conditions indicated and request confirmation of my action.

On motion of Mr. Mayer, this extension of leave was confirmed.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR DR. RAYMOND E. CRIST (5) Dr. Raymond E. Crist, Instructor in Geography, has been awarded a fellowship by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation for twelve months from July 15, 1940, to make studies of the human geography of the Venezuelan Andes. I recommend that he be given leave of absence without pay during the academic year 1940-1941 to enable him to accept this appointment.

On motion of Mr. Mayer, this leave was granted as recommended.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR MISS J OS IE B. HOUCHENS (6) A recommendation that Miss Josie B. Houchens, Binding Librarian, given a leave of absence without pay during the month of August, 1940 addition to her vacation allowance of one m o n t h ) , to enable her to teach in summer session of the Columbia University Library School, which she been doing for the past several years. be (in the has
