5. Miss Cordelia Reed, Assistant in French, November 17-22, 1939, and December 5, 1939, to January 20, 1940, with pay on account of ill health. H e r work has been carried on by several colleagues without additional expense to the University. 6. Dr. Clarissa Rinaker, Assistant Professor of English, leave of absence with full pay for the month of February and one-half pay for the second half of the appointment year 1939-1940, or from March 1 to August 31, 1940, on account of illness. At the September 30, 1939, meeting of the Board (Minutes, page 565), Professor Rinaker was granted leave with pay for the first semester. 7. Dr. D. M. Olkon, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, sick leave with full pay from December 4, 1939, to January 31, 1940. One of his colleagues has been taking care of Doctor Olkon's classes without additional expense to the University. 8. Miss Irene Chott, Junior Clerk in the Dispensary, one month, March 6 to April S, 1940, inclusive, without pay. H e r salary during the period of her absence will be used for the employment of a substitute.

On motion of Mr. Jensen, these leaves were granted as recommended.

APPOINTMENT OF DR. E. R. SERLES AS DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

(5) T h e Board of Trustees on December 18, 1939 (Minutes, page 672), authorized an offer of the deanship of the College of Pharmacy to Dr. Earl R. Series, Dean of the Division of Pharmacy at the South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. H e has advised that he will accept such an appointment. Accordingly, I recommend that he be appointed as Professor of Pharmacy on indefinite tenure and Dean of the College of Pharmacy beginning July 1, 1940, and continuing until August 31, 1941, at an annual salary rate of $7,000. The appointment to the deanship is for less than the two years provided in the University of Illinois Statutes, so that it will coincide with the appointments of other deans and directors, which run with the fiscal biennium.

On motion of Mrs. Plumb, this appointment was made as recommended.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF CERAMIC ENGINEERING (6) A recommendation that the following appointments to the Advisory Committee for the Department of Ceramic Engineering be authorized, to serve for one year from January 1, 1940: Mr. Fred L. Steinhoff, Industrial Publications, Inc., 59 East Van Buren Street, Chicago, Illinois. Mr. F r a n k E. Hodek, General Porcelain Enamel & Mfg. Co., 2700 North Karlov Street, Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Fritz Wagner, Jr., American T e r r a Cotta Corp., Builders Building, Chicago, Illinois. Mr. E. H . Van Schoick, Chicago Retort and Fire Brick Co., Ottawa, Illinois. Mr. Joseph W . Wright, Owens-Illinois Glass Co., Alton, Illinois. Mr. William F. Schlake, Jr., Illinois Brick Co., 228 North LaSalle Street, Chicago, Illinois. This is the same committee appointed a year ago with the exception of Mr. William F. Schlake, Jr., who replaces his father, William F. Schlake, on account of the ill health of the latter. APPOINTMENTS TO THE 19 4 0 SUMMER SESSION STAFF (7) A recommendation that the following appointments be made to the 1040 Summer Session staff: 1. Dr. H o w a r d Robinson, Professor of History at Oberlin College, as Visiting Professor of History at a salary of $800.
