T h e chancellor at Chicago and the vice president for academic affairs concur in the recommendation. T h e University Senates Conference has indicated that no further senate jurisdiction is involved. I recommend approval. O n m o t i o n of M r . H a h n , this r e c o m m e n d a t i o n w a s a p p r o v e d . President's Report on Actions of the Senates Name Change for the Department o f Botany, School of Life Sciences, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Urbana (9) T h e Urbana-Champaign Senate has approved a name change for the Department of Botany to "Department of Plant Biology." This change in name will better reflect the mission of the department in terms of teaching and research, emphasizing the progressive nature and outlook of the department. In addition, the change in name to plant biology will enhance the attractiveness of the program to graduate students and prospective faculty. Because the department teaches and promotes research in the whole of the plants' biology, it is important to identify this in the department title. Retroactive A w a r d i n g of the Ph.D. in Social W o r k , the Doctor of Social W o r k , Urbana On March 19, 1981, the Board of Trustees approved a change in the title of the Doctor of Social Work degree which previously had been awarded at UrbanaChampaign and Chicago Circle. T h e new degree title, Doctor of Philosophy, was adopted without any change in the curriculum. A proposal from the Chicago Circle Graduate College to give past recipients of the Doctor of Social Work degree the opportunity to have the title of their degrees changed to Doctor of Philosophy was approved by the Board of Trustees on May 20, 1982. T h e board authorized the president to approve an analogous change at Urbana-Champaign upon approval of the Urbana-Champaign Senate and the University Senates Conference. Following approval by both of these bodies, the president has approved the proposal. Revision of the Teacher Education Minor in English as a Second Language, Urbana T h e Urbana-Champaign Senate has approved a revision of the Teacher Education Minor in English as a Second Language, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Courses only peripherally related to the teaching of English as a second language will be replaced with others more central to the area, and the three options included in the minor will be eliminated. Therefore, all students choosing this minor will take the same courses and will have the same choice of electives. The revision has also increased the number of hours required. These revisions will increase and refine what the division can teach to potential ESL teachers. Establishment of a Teaching Requirement within the Specialization of Neural and Behavioral Biology in the Ph.D. Program in Biology, Urbana T h e Urbana-Champaign Senate has approved establishing a teaching requirement for the Ph.D. in Biology within the specialization of neural and behavioral biology.
