O n motion of Mr. H a h n , the criteria as presented were approved unanimously. (The text of the criteria follows.) Recommended Criteria for Candidates for the Office of President of the University The University of Illinois is a large, diverse, multicampus institution of public higher education, dedicated to excellence in its pursuit of the land grant ideals of teaching, research, and public service. To be able to lead the University, the president must possess certain demonstrated qualities of intellect, ability, character, and person. Set forth below are the criteria recommended for use in judging the qualities of candidates for the office of president of the University. The first group of criteria describes those particular qualities necessary to the candidate's ability to lead the University of Illinois and insure its proper functioning in society. The president must have a thorough understanding of the role and function in society of higher education in general, and that of the large, publicly supported, comprehensive, land grant university in particular. The president should have a broadly based, adaptive philosophy about the role of public higher education and its relationship to the welfare of the state, the nation, and the citizenry.
