H E A D S H I P O F THE D E P A R T M E N T O F E C O N O M I C S ( i l ) A letter from Dean C. M. Thompson concerning the headship of the Department of Economics, which will be vacant on September I, 1938, because of the retirement of Professor E. L. Bogart.

This matter was referred to the President of the University for further consideration.

A P P O I N T M E N T O F DR. FRANK F . KANTHAK AS SUPERINTENDENT O F CLINICS (12) Dean Frederick B. Noyes of the College of Dentistry recommends the appointment of Dr. F r a n k F . Kanthak as Superintendent of Clinics with the rank of Assistant Professor of Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology, effective July 1, 1938, at an annual salary of $3,500. I concur in the recommendation. O n m o t i o n of D r . M e y e r , t h i s a p p o i n t m e n t w a s m a d e a s r e c o m mended. A P P O I N T M E N T O F J . N E L S O N S P A E T H AS P R O F E S S O R AND C H I E F IN F O R E S T R Y (13) A recommendation from the Dean of the College of Agriculture that there be established a Department of Forestry in the College of Agriculture and the Agricultural Experiment Station, and that Dr. J. Nelson Spaeth, Research Assistant Professor of Forestry and Silviculturist at Cornell University, be appointed Professor and H e a d of the Department and Chief in Forestry in the Station, beginning June 1, 1938, at an annual salary of $5,500. O n m o t i o n of M r . K a r r a k e r , t h i s d e p a r t m e n t w a s e s t a b l i s h e d a n d the appointment m a d e as recommended. CANCELLATION O F SABBATICAL LEAVE O F A B S E N C E FOR P R O F E S S O R P. D. CONVERSE (14) At the meeting of the Board on February n , 1938 (Minutes, page 630), Professor P. D. Converse, of the Department of Business Organization and Operation, was granted sabbatical leave of absence for the second semester of 1938-1939, on one-half pay with the privilege of withdrawing his application without prejudice. Professor Converse desires to withdraw his application and requests that the leave granted him be cancelled. O n m o t i o n of M r s . F r e e m a n , t h i s l e a v e w a s c a n c e l l e d a s r e q u e s t e d .

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR A. J. CASNER

(15) A request from Associate Professor A. J. Casner, of the College of Law, that he be given a leave of absence during the year 1938-1939 so that he may accept an appointment as Visiting Lecturer at H a r v a r d University. I recommend approval.

On motion of Dr. Meyer, this leave was granted as recommended.

RECALL O F P R O F E S S O R F R E D E R I C K G R E E N , E M E R I T U S , TO ACTIVE S E R V I C E (16) P u r s u a n t to the provisions in the University Statutes, the Dean of the College of L a w recommends, and I concur, that Professor Frederick Green, Emeritus, of the College of Law, who was retired on September 1, 1936, be recalled to active service for one year from September 1, 1938, at a salary of $7,000 to teach the courses formerly given by him. This appointment is being made to provide for the work of Associate Professor A. J. Casner, who has requested leave of absence without pay during 1938-1939 to accept a visiting professorship at H a r v a r d .
