varieties of tomatoes. It is necessary to secure the cooperation of seedsmen in order to introduce a new variety of seeds to the general public.

On motion of Mr. Geary, the execution of this agreement was approved.

INVESTIGATION OF EFFECT OF BRAN O N HUMAN BODY

(37) The Kellogg Company of Battle Creek has offered the University a grant of $750 a month for a period of one year beginning January I, 1938, for research work on the effect of bran on the human body and the effect of the human alimentary tract on bran, the investigation to be carried on by the College of Medicine. I recommend acceptance of this offer and the execution of an agreement which will conform in all respects to the University Statutes and policies relating to such investigations.

On motion of Mr. Cleary, this gift was accepted and the execution of a proper agreement was authorized.

PURCHASES RECOMMENDED

(38) A recommendation that the following purchases be authorized: 1. One International truck, with cab-over-engine chassis, garbage carrier body and hydraulic hoist, from the Power Farm Implement Company of Champaign at a net price of $1,800 (includes a trade-in allowance of $313.48 on an old truck). This recommendation is based on an analysis of bids received on five makes of trucks, including both the cab-over-engine and standard chassis, and is the same recommendation which was presented to the Board at the meeting on November 10, 1937, action on which was deferred pending further information. Copies of the detailed recommendation of the Physical Plant Department and of the analysis of the bids received are submitted herewith. 2. Motor Generator Sets 1—2 Unit Motor Generator Set—5 KW Generator, 7 ^ H.P. Motor 1—2 Unit Motor Generator Set—7.5 KW Generator, 15 H.P. Motor for the Department of Electrical Engineering, from the General Electric Company, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1,000. 3. 177 cases Pyrex Laboratory Glassware for the General Chemical Storeroom from Rascher and Betzold at a price of approximately $3,400. This is non-competitive material manufactured only by the Corning Glass Works and is sold through jobbers at prices fixed by the manufacturer. O n motion of M r . Cleary, these purchases were authorized as recommended.

PURCHASES AUTHORIZED

(39) A report of the following purchases authorized by the President of the University in accordance with the University Statutes: 1. Lighting fixtures for University Auditorium from the Danville Electric Supply Company, the lowest bidder, at its lot bid of $1,649 f-o.b. Urbana. 2. One carload of Chemically Pure and Commercial Acids from the Mallinckrodt Chemical Company, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1,736.73 (plus a charge of $1432.50 for containers, a standard charge, but which are returnable for full credit), f.o.b. Chemistry Building. O n motion of M r . Wieland, the action of the President of the U n i versity in authorizing these purchases was approved and confirmed.
