MEETING OF T H E EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

DECEMBER 18, 1937

The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois met at the Blackstone Hotel, in Chicago, at six o'clock p.m. on Saturday, December 18, 1937. Mr. Orville M. Karraker, Chairman, Mr. Oscar G. Mayer, and Dr. Karl A. Meyer, members of the Committee, President A. C. Willard, and Judge Sveinbjorn Johnson were present. The Executive Committee considered the following matter presented by President Willard:

OFFER OF COLLECTION OF PAINTINGS FROM MR. & MRS. MERLE J . TREES

The Board of Trustees at its meeting on December 3, 1937 (Minutes, page 581), referred to the Executive Committee, with power to act, the following offer from the Honorable Merle J. Trees, an alumnus of the University of Illinois and a former member of the Board, and Mrs. Emily Nichols Trees, an alumna of the University, their offer having been made through the University of Illinois Foundation: November 29, 1937 University of Illinois Foundation, University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, III.

GENTLEMEN :

We are offering the University of Illinois through your organization, a collection of oil paintings. We estimate the appraised value of our collection, when complete, will be approximately $100,000. We offer this gift on the following conditions: 1. You are to give no publicity to this offer unless and until authorized by us to do so. 2. Upon receipt of this letter you are to discuss the matter with the President of the University of Illinois promptly. If he approves of the proposal, a recommendation is to be submitted to the next meeting of the Board of Trustees, which is to be held at the Blackstone Hotel, Chicago, December 3, 19373- The University of Illinois must agree to keep the entire collection together in one room or if in more than one room, then in rooms adjoining in such a manner through an entrance or hall, that the collection may be regarded as housed in one room for exhibition purposes. 4- The University of Illinois must agree to have the paintings examined
