APPOINTMENT O F DR. H A N S BETHE AS PROFESSOR OF PHYSICS

(12) A recommendation for the appointment of Dr. Hans Bethe, Assistant Professor of Physics at Cornell University, as Professor of Physics on indefinite tenure, beginning September I, 1937, at a salary of $6,000 a year. Professor Bethe will succeed Professor C. T. Knipp, who is due to be retired September 1, I937-

On motion of Mr. Cleary, this appointment was authorized as recommended.

APPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR PETER L. SPENCER AS VISITING PROFESSOR OF EDUCATION

(13) A recommendation for the appointment of Peter L. Spencer, Professor of Education at Claremont Colleges, Claremont, California, as Visiting Professor of Education, on one-half time, for one year beginning September 1, 1937, at a salary of $2,250, one-half to be paid by the College of Education and the other half by the Division of University Extension. It is proposed to have Professor Spencer teach extramural courses as well as to give resident instruction. This is a temporary appointment to one of the two new positions authorized by the Board on December 15, 1936 (Minutes, page 129). O n motion of M r s . Plumb, this appointment was authorized.

ORGANIZATION OF DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY IN COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

(14) The members of the Department of Physiology in the College of Medicine of professorial rank have requested that the Department be organized with a Chairman instead of a Head. The University Statutes provide that such requests shall be presented to the Board together with the recommendation of the Dean of the College and the President of the University. The Dean does not concur in the request of the Department, and under the circumstances I recommend that no change of departmental organization be made at this time. O n motion of M r . Mayer, this change was not approved.

APPOINTMENT O F DR. GEORGE E. WAKERLIN

(15) A recommendation that Dr. George E. Wakerlin, who is at present a member of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, be appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology in the College of Medicine, on indefinite tenure, at a salary of $5400 effective September I, 1937.

On motion of Mr. Mayer, this appointment was made as recommended.

RESIGNATION OF PROFESSOR F. S. RONALDS

(16) Dr. F. S. Ronalds, Assistant Professor of History, has offered his resignation from the faculty to accept a position as Historian in the National Parks Service. He is finishing his work today, and will have completed all but five or six weeks of the service required of him under his contract. I recommend that his resignation be accepted, effective July 19, 1937, and that he be given a leave of absence with pay from April 15 to July 19, so that he may receive the proportionate amount of his salary for 1936-1937 corresponding to the amount of service he will have rendered.

On motion of Mr. Cleary, this resignation was accepted as recommended.
