n6 BOARD OF TRUSTEES [January 9 SALE O F HOUSES O N SKATING RINK SITE O N FIFTH STREET (13) On recommendation of the Supervising Architect I recommend that the two houses on the Fifth Street property, which is the site of the proposed skating rink to be built by the Athletic Association, be advertised for sale and sold to the best advantage possible by the Comptroller and that the net proceeds be turned over to the Athletic Association inasmuch as the land and houses were a gift to the University from the Association. On motion of Mr. Barr, this recommendation was adopted. RELEASE OF PATENT RIGHTS TO DR. H. C. KREMERS (14) Dr. Harry C. Kremers, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, has developed the use of Misch metal as an electrolytic rectifier. Although there is no likelihood that the process will have any immediate commercial value, it appeals to him as worth controlling. The Committee on Patents is of the opinion that the University is not interested in the patent and recommends that Dr. Kremers be permitted to take out the patent himself, if he chooses to do so. I recommend that Dr. Kremer's discovery be released so far as the University is concerned and that he be permitted tofilean application for a patent for the process. O n m o t i o n of M r s . E v a n s , this r e c o m m e n d a t i o n w a s adopted. COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATION OF FATIGUE TESTS OF METALS A T ELEVATED T E M P E R A T U R E S (15) On recommendation of the Dean of the College of Engineering, I recommend approval of an agreement with the Joint Research Committee of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for a cooperative investigation of fatigue tests of metals at elevated temperatures, to be carried on in the Engineering Experiment Station. T h e agreement has been drawn for a period of one year from January 1, 1929, and the Joint Research Committee agrees to pay the University two thousand dollars to cover the expenses of the investigation. The agreement is of the form and character authorized by the Board for cooperative investigations. O n m o t i o n of M r s . Grigsby, this a g r e e m e n t w a s authorized. EXTENSION OF AGREEMENT FOR COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATION O F CAST IRON PIPE (16) On recommendation of the Dean of the College of Engineering I recommend that the agreement entered into between the University and the Sectional Committee on Cast Iron Pipe (Minutes, October 12, 1927, page 473) for an investigation of cast iron pipe, which expired November 1, 1928, be extended to November 1, 1929. O n motion of M r . Trees, this a g r e e m e n t w a s extended. EXTENSION OF AGREEMENT FOR COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATION OF BOILER F U R N A C E REFRACTORIES (17) On recommendation of the Dean of the College of Engineering I recommend that the agreement entered into between the University and the Special Committee on Boiler Furnace Refractories of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (Minutes, April 12, 1928, page 582) for an investigation of boiler furnace refractories, which expired November 1, 1928, be extended to November 1, 1929. O n m o t i o n of M r s . Busey, this a g r e e m e n t w a s extended. ACCIDENT COMPENSATION FOR EMPLOYEES ENGAGED IN COOPERATIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS AND COMMERCIAL TESTS (18) Sometime ago I raised with the officers concerned the question of compensation for accidents of employees engaged in cooperative research projects and commercial testing, asking them to study the whole matter and report on a sound and proper
