UNIVERSITY O F ILLINOIS

*75

W e have an appropriation of #10,000 and the work contemplated under Bid No. 1 wai to be done with this appropriation, but believing that we might possibly secure advantageous bids at this time, w e took bids on an additional amount of work, as represented in Bid No. 2. I now wish to recommend that $4,000 be added to our present appropriation for this work and that a contract be awarded to the National Drain Tile Company for both projects, totaling $12,100.02. There is some other work which has to be done in the way of terracing certain areas, the rebuilding of head walls, etc., which w e will do ourselves and for which the additional appropriation requested will be necessary. Yours truly,

James M. White

Supervising Architect

On motion of Dr. Noble, this contract was awarded to the low bidder as recommended. MURAL DECORATIONS IN THE NEW LIBRARY

I concur in this recommendation. O n motion of M r s . Grigsby, this extension of time w a s granted.

ROOF ON NEW ARCHITECTURAL BUILDING

(12) The following letters from Professor White and Mr. Piatt: November 11, 1926 President David Kinley, 3$$ Administration Building Dear President Kinley: At the meeting of the Board of Trustees held on September 22, it was voted that they did not approve of the use of a gray slate roof on the new Architectural building. I a m enclosing a communication from Mr. Piatt and I advise that the Board concur in his recommendation. Yours truly, James M . White Supervising Architect November 8, 1926 Professor James M . White, Urbana, Illinois Dear Professor White: Replying to yours of November 5th I have reached the conclusion that perhaps it would be a mistake to change the color of the slate on the Architectural Building, and I think it should be the same green slate as that used on the other buildings. W e can very well afford to make the other change which m y drawings call for, that is by making a uniform size of slate exposJM less to the weather than the other building where they are graded, starting ?%*. and ending about 4^4" at the top. B y having a unifonn exposure to the weather more edges will appear and a more interesting texture will result. I do not think the difference between this and the other buildings will be sufficiently marked to be objectionable. As the individual slates will be smaller I should think it would be economy.
