The Board considered the following matters submitted by the President of the University.

COKE PROCESS (1) A proposed contract for the licensing of the Parr process for coking bi tuminous coal. (See page 19.)

This matter was referred to a special committee consisting of Mr. Ward, Mr. Trimble, Mr. Abbott, President Carr, and President Kinley.

REPORT ON REGISTRATION (2) A report from Mr. G. P. Tuttle, Registrar, that the enrollment at Urbana at the end of the first week of the college year was 7,171. The corresponding figure for last year was 7,080. Our increase to date at Urbana is, therefore, 91 students.

This report was received for record.

DEAN DAVENPORT APPOINTED VICE-PRESIDENT (3) A recommendation that Dean Eugene Davenport be appointed Vice-President of the University, for one year, beginning September 1, 1920, at a salary of $1000 in addition to his salary as dean.

On motion of Mr. Trimble, seconded by Mr. Ward, this appointment was made.

(4) A recommendation that the office of Provost of the University be established and that Dean K. C. Babcock be entrusted with the discharge of the duties of the office for one year beginning September 1,1920, at an additional salary of $1000 for the year Ifr shall be the duty of the Provost to make suggestions to the President and keep him informed about .the general educational condition and progress of the University and to discharge such other duties as the President may assign, to him. His duties shall in no wise.inpinge upon, alter, or diminish the authority and responsibility of the deans of the colleges, the directors of the schools, or the heads of the departments. In the discharge of his work for the President, howev er, he shall be entitled to such information from any officer of the University as he may need. S U P E R I N T E N D E N T OF BUSINESS OPERATIONS (£) A further recommendation that to the present titles and duties of Professor J. M. White be added the title and duties of Superintendent of Business Operations of the University, for one year, beginning September 1, 1920, at an additional salary of &1000. The duties of the office shall be to improve the efficiency of actual business pro^jesses. by making suggestions to the President concerning the efficiency of any business operation conducted by the University, altho without authority to interfere with or to change duties how discharged by other officers of the University in the conduct of business operations. This officer will also discharge such other duties within the general limits of his titles as the President may assign to him.
