from six to eight thousand dollars; but notwithstanding this burden, we shall contribute $750 or the $4,000 that the special committee asks the West to,contribute. If your University can send to the Treasurer 75% of its special contribution of last year, he is of the opinion that the Board of Trustees will have funds to carry on the work to the end of this fiscal year, September 30th, when the Union will probably be discontinued as a Club House, as demobilization will then be practically over. I trust that we may be favored with the contribution asked. Please send it as last year to Mr. Henry B. Thompson, Treasurer, 320 Broadway, New York City, New York. Very sincerely yours,

H. B. HUTCHINS

May 28, 1919 Deaw Kinky, Vice President, University of Illinois

M Y DEAR DEAN KINLEY:

I have yours of May 26th. I think I can explain the situation in regard to your contributions to the American University Union. The $500 items mentioned in your letter, the first paid November 8th, 1917, and the second, December 10th, 1918, are items representing your regular subscription to the Union, $500 a year,—at least I as* sume that this is the fact. This University paid $500 as a regular subscription and I think that the University of Illinois is in the same list. The $1,000 item that you paid July 26th, 1918, is a special additional subscription that was solicited last year. As I recollect, I conducted the correspondence. This University contributed an extra $1,000. For the present year Treasurer Thompson thinks that the expenses can be met if the extra subscription is 75% of last year's subscription. This, as I recollect, was explained in my letter to President James. If this explanation does not clear the matter to your satisfaction, kindly advise. Sincerely yours,

H. B. HUTCHINS
