BOARD OF TRUSTEES

MATTERS S U B M I T T E D BY VICE-PRESIDENT KINLEY

The Board considered the following matters submitted by VicePresident Kinley.

APPOINTMENT OF DR. JOHN R. KLINE (1) A recommendation that Dr. John R. Kline of the Sheffield Scientific School be appointed Associate in Mathematics for two years beginning September 1,1919, at a salary of $2,000 a year.

On motion of Mr. Abbott, this appointment was authorized.

APPOINTMENT OF DR. J. C. WATSON (2) A recommendation that Dr. J. C. Watson be appointed Honorary Lecturer in the Classics for one year beginning September 1, 1919, without salary.

On motion of Mrs. Evans, this appointment was authorized.

SPECIAL MILITARY U N I T S IN THE R> O. T. C. (3) A statement that the University has been requested by the various divisions of the War Department to establish certain special units of work in the R. O. T. C , among them units of field artillery, coast artillery, the signal corps, the balloon corps, tank corps, motor transports, and cavalry. President James has given considerable thought to the whole matter and it has been considered by our military department and others at the University whose work would be affected by these units, especially Dean Richards, in the College of Engineering. I recommend that authority be given to proceed with the organization of a unit of field artillery and such other units as may seem to the President advisable.

On motion of Mr. Trimble, this recommendation was adopted.

BOND FOR SIGNAL. CORPS EQUIPMENT (4) A recommendation that the Comptroller be authorized to furnish a bond for government equipment for the Signal Corps Unit.

On motion of Mr. Hoit, the following resolution was unanimouslyadopted: RESOLFED, that Lloyd Morey, Comptroller of the University of Illinois, be authorized to take out a bond in the sum of Fifteen Thousand Dollars ($15,000), in favor of the United States of America, to cover the return of equipment issued for the use of the Signal Corps Unit of the Reserve Officers Training Corps of the University of Illinois.
