postoffice as in his judgment seems to be wise, when definite plans are submitted to him. At this point, Mr. Ward withdrew.

DEAN OF T H E C Q L L L E G E OF LAW

(9) A recommendation that the President of the University be given authority to appoint Professor Henry W. Ballantine, now of the University of Wisconsin, to be Professor of Law and Dean of the College of Law beginning September 1, 1916, at a salary of $5,000 a year; also to appoint a librarian for the Library of the College of Law, who should also foe secretary of the faculty of the College of Law, at a salary of $1,200, and to appoint a stenographer for the College of Law at a salary of $1,009. On motion of Mr. Small, this recommendation was concurred in.

APPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR BARRY GILBERT

(10) A recommendation that Mr. Barry Gilbert be appointed Jprofessor of Law for one year from September 1, 1916, at a salary of $3,500 a year, to take the place made vacant by the leave of absence granted to Professor Frederick Green. On motion of Mr. Carr, this appointment was made. APPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR OF CERAMICS (11) A request for authority to appoint Professor Cullen W. Parmelee of Rutgers College, New Jersey, to be Professor of Ceramic Engineer-ing at a salary of $3,500 a year, beginning September 1, 1916. O n motion of M r . Carr, this appointment was authorized. A t this point, M r . W a r d returned t o the meeting.

APPOINTMENT OF DEAN OF WOMEN

(12) A request for authority to appoint Dr. Fanny C. Gates of Grinnell College to be Dean of Women. On motion of Mrs. Evans, the President of the University was authorized to appoint Dr. Gates Dean of Women at a salary of $3,000 a year, work and salary to begin as soon as possible. At this point, Mr. Small withdrew.

RETIRING ALLOWANCE FOR PROFESSOR N. C. RIGKER

(13) A request from Dr. M. C. Ricker for retirement from active service as Professor of Architecture. Dr. Ricker is now seventy-three years of age. He entered the service of the University as -instructor September 1, 1873, and is thus completing forty-three years of service. For a large part of that time he was director of the courses in architecture, and for twenty-seven years Dean of the College of Engineering. He has given practically all of his life to the development of the .College of Engineering and the department of architecture and he has been unstinting in his efforts in their behalf.
