(4) A recommendation from Professor J. M. White that Mr. W. C. Wilde, an employee in the department of buildings who was injured by falling from a ladder, be paid the sum of $250 in lieu of all claims against the University for injuries received while in its service. On motion of Mr. Ward, this recommendation was concurred in. CONTINUATION OF WAGES FOR JANITOR IN M I L I T I A

(5) A recommendation from Professor J. M. White that the difference between the wages of Mr. Harry Swearingen as night janitor in the Administration Building and as a private in Company M of the Illinois National Guard be paid while he is in service with the company on the Mexican frontier; with the provision that this arrangement shall not extend beyond August 31, 1916. On motion of Mrs. Evans, this recommendation was concurred in. The vote was as follows: Ayes, Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Busey, Mr. Carr, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Henrotin, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Small, Mr. W a r d ; noes, none; present but not voting, Miss Watson; absent, Mr. Blair, Mr. Dunne, Mr. Trevett.

EXTRA COST OF EXCAVATING FOR CERAMICS BUILDING

(6) A letter from the Supervising Architect concerning the settlement with A. W. Stoolman for the general contract for the Ceramics Building.

DEAR SIR:

I wish to settle with A. W. Stoolman for the general contract of the Ceramics building, and should like to have the authorization of the Board on one item of the extras, namely, that of the extended footings at the south end of the building due to quicksand encountered in the excavating. After the building had been staked out in the location shown on the plan, it was found desirable to move the entire building about 6 feet south so as to allow a greater distance between the Ceramics building and the Locomotive Laboratory. As it later developed, most of the bad foundation material encountered occurred in this 6 foot strip. Furthermore the drawing" furnished the contractors for bids showed records of borings made at various points on the site, none of which indicated that a condition like that which developed would be met. The contract provided certain unit prices fo» which extra excavation and concrete work was to have been executed.
