I am also enclosing a summary statement of the expenses of the School of Military Aeronautics actually paid to and including September 30, 1917, a total of $17,295.26. In addition to the expenses as thus shown, there were outstanding and unpaid at September 30 purchase orders and job orders estimated to cost a total of $9,344.37, including an estimate of $5,000 for alterations in the Y. M. C. A. Building. These figures do not include the following expenses related to the project: Heat, current, and water furnished to the Y. M. C. A. Building, being used as barracks, to September 30, estimated $541.76. The same items to the President's old house, being used as the Y. M. C. A. Building (estimate not available t o d a y ) . Crawford, having faithfully devoted twenty of the most productive years of his life to the University of Illinois, much of the time doing double duty as Librarian and Secretary to the Faculty, and at a time when the salaries paid would not provide for the inevitable "rainy day"; and
