APPROPRIATION FOR PRINTING MACHINERY (24) A letter from the Committee on University Printing asking for an appropriation of eight thousand dollars for the purchase of certain printing equipment. December 13, 1916 President Edmund J. James, University of Illinois

DEAR M R . PRESIDENT:

As a means of affording relief in the present unsatisfactory situation of University printing and also as a means of providing sorely needed facilities for the work in journalism, the committee on the Press respectfully submit the following recommendations: 1. That the University purchase immediately the following equipment, at a cost of eight thousand dollars: 1 linotype and, motor; 1 cylinder press and motor; 1 cutter and m o t o r ; 1 wire stitcher with motor; 1 folder with motor; 2 imposing stones with frames; 1 proof press; 1 paper truck; 10 chases, various sizes; type, galleys, etc. T h e Illini Publishing Company has expressed a willingness to add the following equipment, at a cost of four thousand dollars: 1 news press; 1 newspaper folder; 1 imposing stone; 1 proof press; chas.es, type, etc. This equipment, writh that already in the sprintograph room, will suffice to turn out the Daily Illini and a large quantity of other work such as blanks, stationery, programs, : pamphlets, and circulars like the Board Minutes, the Weekly Calendar, and similar printed matter. All of this equipment would have to be included in a complete printing establishment. This is the miinimum quantity and assortment which can be installed and operated with economy and satisfaction, 2. That all of the basement of the west wing of University Hall be assigned to the work in journalism and printing, and prepared immediately for the installation of this equipment. The space is large enough to accommodate the machinery mentioned above and to allow for a slight expansion. Jn this connection, we wish to emphasize the importance of arranging the machinery so that the p a r t ' o f it which' is to be used by the Illini may be isolated from the rest of the plant and may be given over entirely to the work of the department of journalism. It will be necessary, of course, to provide a separate shift of labor to handle the Illini. This arrangement was contemplated in our report of last Ma}'. W e consider that the need for the purchase of this equipment is urgent. Respectfully submitted,
