MATTERS PRESENTED BY T H E PRESIDENT OF T H E UNIVERSITY. President James presented the following matters for consideration:

A P P O I N T M E N T OF A PROFESSOR OF P L A N T PATHOLOGY.

(1) A recommendation that Dr. Frank L. Stevens, at present Dean of the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Art's in the University of Porto Rico, be appointed Professor of Plant Pathology in the University of Illinois, at a salary of four thousand dollars ($4,000) per annum, beginning February 1, 1914, or as soon thereafter as he shall report for duty in Urbana; and, further, that the sum of five hundred dollars ($500) be appropriated for the purchase, care, and transportation of laboratory material which Professor Stevens may collect for the University of Illinois in Porto Rico and Cuba. On motion of Mrs. Henrotin, the foregoing recommendation was approved. The vote was as follows: Ayes, Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Henrotin, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Moore, Mr. Trevett, Miss Watson; noes, none; absent, Mr. Blair, Mrs. Busey, Mr. Dunne, Mr. Meeker, Mr. Montgomery.

APPROPRIATION FOR T H E PURCHASE OF A P R I N T I N G OUTFIT.

(2) A recommendation that fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000), or so much thereof as may be necessary, be appropriated for the purchase of a printing outfit to enable the University to take care of current printing, such as confidential circulars, examination papers, departmental circulars, bulletins, etc., etc., and also to give an opportunity to students in the courses in business to study the organization and management of printing offices; and, further, that the building in the old horticultural field used until recently by the Department of Horticulture as a service building for the greenhouses be set apart for use as a printing office. , On motion of Mrs. Evans, this recommendation was approved, and an appropriation of fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) was made for this purchase. The vote was as follows: Ayes, Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Henrotin, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Moore, Mr. Trevett, Miss Watson; noes, none; absent, Mr. Blair, Mrs. Busey, Mr. Dunne, Mr. Meeker, Mr. Montgomery.

APPROPRIATION FOR A N ORGAN IN T H E AUDITORIUM.

(3) A recommendation that fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) be appropriated for the purchase of an organ for the Auditorium, to be put in the organ loft already provided in that building, with the provision that the organ so purchased shall be built in such a way that additions to it can, be readily made. On motion of Miss Watson, this recommendation was approved, and an appropriation of fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) was made for this purchase. The vote was as follows: Ayes, Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Henrotin, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Moore, Mr. Trevett, Miss Watson; noes, none; absent, Mr. Blair, Mrs. Busey, Mr. Dunne, Mr. Meeker, Mr. Montgomery.

APPROPRIATIONS FOR BOOKS A N D M U S E U M MATERIAL.

(4) A recommendation that the sum of fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) be appropriated from the fund for permanent improvements for the purchase of books for the University Library during the year beginning July 1, 1913'; this amount to be additional to the sum of twenty thousand dollars already appropriated for the purchase of the Vahlen and Aron libraries and the other collections offered with these libraries. (5) A recommendation that the sum of fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) be appropriated from the fund for permanent equipment for the purchase of museum material for the year beginning July 1, 1913. On motion of Mrs. Evans, the foregoing two recommendations were approved, and the proposed appropriations of fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) for books for the Library and fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) for Museum materials were made. The vote was as follows: Ayes, Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Henrotin, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Moore, Mr. Trevett, Miss Watson; noes, none; absent, Mr. Blair, Mrs. Busey, Mr. Dunne, Mr. Meeker, Mr. Montgomery. At this point Mr. Moore withdrew. COMPTROLLER'S REPORT O N P U R C H A S E OF LAND. (6) The following letters from Professor George E. Frazer, Comptroller, with reference to the consummation of purchases of land ordered by the Board of Trustees.
