These letters were received to be printed in the minutes:

September 30, 1913. President Edmund J. James, University of Illinois. DEAR SIR: At the meeting of the Board of Trustees held on July 23, 1913, the Board of Trustees ordered the purchase of the following lands at the prices indicated: The Busey tract of 160 acres, being the NW.% Sec. 20, Twp. 19 N., R. ^9 E., 3d P.M., at $1,000 per acre, $160,000. The Pell tract of 40 acres, being the N^S.%, SW.% Sec. 20, Twp. 19 N., R. 9 E„ 3d P.M., at $600 per acre, $24,000. The McCullough tract of 80 acres, being the S.% of the SW.% Sec. 20, Twp. 19 N., R. 9 E., 3d P.M., a t $600, $48,000. The Douglas tract of 40 acres, being the NE.%, SW.% Sec. 20, Twp. 19 N., R. 9 E., 3d P.M., a t $600, $24,000. At a meeting of the Board of Trustees held in Springfield on September 6, 1913, the board ordered the purchase of the Reinhart tract at a price not to exceed; $8,000. The Reinhart tract comprises 10 acres and lies between First Street and the Illinois Central Railway, immediately south of the Athletic Association grounds in the city of Champaign. At the meeting of the board on September 6, the board approved the purchase of the Augustus tract of 13 acres at a price of $20,000. The Augustus tract comprises the south 52 rods of the E.%, SE.%, SE.% of section 18, Twp. 19 N., R. 9 E. of the 3d P.M. In pursuance of the orders of the board, an abstract of the title of each tract was secured from the owner of t h e tract. In the absence of Dean O. A. Harker, Legal Counsel of the University, these abstracts of title, together with the proposed deeds, were submitted t o Attorney W. P . Woods, of the firm of Savage and Woods, of Champaign, 111., for his opinion as to the merchantable title shown by the abstract of title and the proposed deeds. Attorney Woods examined not only the abstract of title, but also the original records having to do with the titles to each of these tracts of land, and rendered an' opinion addressed to the Trustees of the University of Illinois, stating that in each tract there was a merchantable title in the possession of the vendors. Upon the return of Dean O. A. Harker, Legal Counsel, these opinions of Attorney W. F . Woods were submitted to Dean Harker and were concurred in by him. Vouchers were presented to the State Auditor for the purchase of the Busey, McCullough, Pell, and Douglas tracts at the prices indicated, and State warrants were issued therefor. In the case of the Reinhart tract, a State warrant to the amount of $7,063.10 was issued in favor of Hazen S. Capron. Mr. Capron had previously been paid $600 by University warrant for an option on the tract. In the case of the Augustus tract, University warrant for $20,000 was issued in favor of Mr. Howard C. Augustus. Deeds approved , by Attorney W. F . Woods were received from the proper parties in each case, and were regularly filed with the county clerk of Champaign County. The abstract of title in each case was made complete up to and including the transfer of title to the University. The abstracts of titles and deeds are now on file in the vault of the business office of the University. DEAR S I R : At your request, I have examined the deeds under which the following tracts of land have been conveyed recently t o the University, and I indicate below the date on which the University, and I indicate below the date on which the University comes into legal possession of each tract, as shown by the deed t o the t r a c t : Busey, 160 acres March 1, 1914 McCullough, 80 acres March 1, 1914 Douglas, 40 acres March 1, 1914 Pell, 40 acres (Mr. Pell expressly reserves growing crops) Sept. 4, 1913 Reinhart, 10 acres (H. S. Capron) Sept. 9, 1913 Augustus, 13 acres July 14, 1913 In the case of the Pell, Reinhart and Augustus tracts, the date given is the date of the deed since no express mention is made of the date of transfer of possession in the deeds to these three tracts. (7) The following list of assignments of funds for the College of Medicine for the year 1913-14 made by the President of the University under the authority given him by the Board of Trustees.

This list was received for record:

(1) An assignment of twenty-five hundred dollars ($2,500) for the support of the Department of Obstetrics; fifteen hundred dollars ($1,500) of this amount, or so much thereof as may be necessary, to be used toward the support of a t least six patients in the University Hospital for the benefit of the hospital clinics, a t a cost of five dollars ($5) a week per patient, this amount being about half the cost of each patient to the hospital; the remainder of the assignment to be used
