MEETINGS.

STENOGRAPHER TO BE EMPLOYED FOR BOARD

On motion of Mrs. Busey, it was voted that the secretary be instructed to have a stenographer present at meetings of the board, until further notice. At this point Mr. Meeker withdrew. Mrs. Busey also withdrew. MATTERS PRESENTED BY T H E PRESIDENT OF T H E UNIVERSITY. President James presented the following matters for consideration:

AUTHORITY FOR DISPOSAL OF W O R N - O U T EQUIPMENT.

(1) A recommendation from Dr. W. F. M. Goss, Dean of the College of Engineering, that the comptroller be authorized to sell or exchange certain portions of the shop equipment in the Department of Mechanical Engineering which in the opinion of the department are entirely obselete for purposes of instruction. On motion of Mr. Trevett, it was voted that the comptroller be authorized to dispose of worn out equipment, apparatus, or furniture upon the recommendation of the head of the department. concerned, approved by the Dean of the College. The vote was as follows: Ayes, Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Evans, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Moore, Mr. Trevett, Miss Watson; noes, none; absent, Mr. Blair, Mrs. Busey, Mr. Dunne, Mrs. Henrotin, Mr. Meeker. At this point Mrs. Busey resumed her seat with the board. SUPPORT OF O R C H E S T R A L CONCERTS. (2) A petition from Professor C. H. Mills, Director of the School of Music, 'Signed by a large number of the faculty and others, that the trustees authorize a series of orchestral concerts, to be held in the Auditorium during the coming .year at the expense of the University; it being believed that by making arrangements immediately three or four good orchestras like the Thomas Orchestra, the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Orchestra, the Damrosch Orchestra, and possibly others of. the same class, may be brought to the University for one or more concerts; and that it may be possible by selling a season ticket which would admit to all of these concerts at the price of two dollars or two dollars and a half (with a special higher price for single admissions) to realize an income of between three thousand and thirty-five hundred dollars, and thus to offer from four to eight, concerts for the benefit of the student body at a total cost to the University of not more than fifteen hundred dollars; this petition being accompanied by a recommendation that an appropriation of not to exceed five thousand dollars ($5,000) for the purpose named therein be made. On motion of Mr. Trevett, this recommendation was referred to the Committee on Students' Welfare, with power to act, and with authority to expend not more than five thousand dollars ($5,000) for this purpose. The vote was as follows: Ayes, Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Busey ^ Mrs. Evans, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Moore, Mr. Trevett, Miss Watson; noes, none; absent, Mr. Blair, Mr. Dunne, Mrs. Henrotin, Mr. Meeker. .

(3) A letter from Mr. Clarence H. Blackall, Architect, of Boston, concerning t h e site of the proposed building for a general library of the University; accompanied by a memorandum in regard to the recommendation made with reference to this matter by a committee of the University Senate. . This letter from Mr. Blackall, with the accompanying memorandum, was received to be printed in the minutes; and the question of the site for the proposed new building was referred to the Committee on Library for report. • [LETTER FROM MR. JAMBS : The site which has been tentatively selected for the proposed general library of the University, a location with the north and south axis, on the axis of Wright Street, and the east and west axis on the axis of the Armory, seems to me to be on the whole the best that could be selected for
