MATTERS PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT JAMES.

LEASE OF LAND. 1. A communication from Cyril G. Hopkins, head of the Department of Agronomy, inclosing a lease for an experiment field owned by J. M. Price, of Vienna, Illinois. The property comprises from nine to ten acres of land, which is to be.leased to the University of Illinois at the price of five dollars ($5.00) per acre per annum from the first day of January, 1910, and so long thereafter as said University of Illinois shall desire to continue the use of said land for purposes of agricultural experimentation. Voted that said communication be referred to the Committee on Agriculture with a request to formulate, draft and present to the board for approval a standard form of University lease. LEAVES OP ABSENCE. 2. First—Recommendation from Professor A. P. Carman, approved by the dean of the College of Engineering, that Dr. Charles T. Knipp, assistant professor of Physics, be given a year's leave of absence on half pay, for the purpose of foreign study, as provided in the statutes of the University. Second—Request from Professor Thomas E. Oliver, approved by Dean Evarts B. Greene, of the College of Literature and Arts, that Professor Oliver be given a year's leave of absence with half pay, to date from Sept. 1, 1910, for the purpose of foreign study, as provided in the statutes of the University. Voted that the president of the University may grant such leave of absence if he finds it possible to make suitable arrangements for carrying on the work of the respective departments. Thirds-Requests from Miss Isabel Bevier that her leave of absence on half pay, which was given until Dec. 31, 1909, be extended until Sept. 1, 1910. Voted that this request be granted.

DONATION FOR PURCHASE OF GERMAN BOOKS.

3. The announcement of a donation of one hundred dollars ($100.00) from Dr. O. L. Schmidt of the city of Chicago, to the University for the purchase of books for the University library, which may be recommended by the Department of German. Voted that the board accept this donation and express through the president of the board its appreciation of this gift. • COMMISSION ON CAMPUS PLAN. 4. A statement that the first meeting of the commission upon the general campus plan appointed by the president of* the board, was held in' the office of D. H. Burnham of Chicago on Friday, Dec. 3, 1909. Present, W. Carbys Zimmerman, State architect, chairman; D. H. Burnham of Chicago, and Clarence A. Blackall, Boston, Massachusetts. The commission took up in a preliminary way a discussion of the probable needs of the University and the consequent demands for buildings and campus space. The president of the University was requested to prepare for the use of the .commission some preliminary estimate as to the probable number of students to be provided for, the number of departments, the number of instructors, and the number of buildings for a period of say fifteen to twenty years.
