URBANA, ILLINOIS, August 19, 1896.

At a conference of certain members of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois held this day in the office 6f the President of the University, at which there were present Messrs. Bullard, Graham,, Morgan, Morrison, and Raymond the following' resolution was unanimously adopted: Whereas, The burning of the Chemical Laboratory confronts the Board of Trustees with the question of its permanent and temporary repairs, and, Whereas, The building had in consequence of the rapid increase of the students become seriously inadequate to the.needs of the Chemistry Department of the University, and at an early date would have become wholly inadequate; and Whereas, The necessity of immediate provision for the Chemistry Department is imperative and there is no money appropriated with which to meet such an emergency so that what is used must be taken from the appropriation for ordinary running expenses, though fully needed therefor, therefore be it Resolved, That any repairs made should not be made with the view of reestablishing that building as the permanent Chemical Laboratory, but that steps be taken to put the building, at the least possible expense, in a condition so that it may be used temporarily by the Chemistry Department until the State shall make permanent provision therefor.
