The Board, after expressing its h e a r t y a p p r o v a l of the request of t h e petitioners a n d i t s s y m p a t h y with their aims, referred the petition a n d letters t o t h e Committee on Instruction. The Committee on Instruction presented t h e following report, which was approved

GENTLEMEN: Your Committee on Instruction, pursuant to your directions, begs to report that, in consideration of t h e increased labors of the Acting Regent, t h e sum of one thousand dollars per annum he paid him in addition to his regular salary for t h e time he acts as such Regent. Resolved, T h a t t h e pledge heretofore required of candidates for entrance to the University in regard to college fraternities be omitted, and t h a t the subject of these fraternities be referred to the committee on rules.

A telegram from Professor DeGarmo was read, s t a t i n g t h a t he h a d accepted the presidency of Swarthmore College. This being taken a s in effect a resignation by him of t h e professorship of psychology, i t was

Reso'ved, That we learn with great regret t h a t Professor Charles DeGarmo resigns his position of professor of psychology in this University, but t h a t we feel constrained to accept the resignation, to take effect, however, December 31, 1891.

The m a t t e r of building t h e newT dry house and lumber sheds was p u t into t h e hands of Professor Kicker and t h e Business Agent on motion of Mr. R a a b . On motion of Mr. Cobb, Professor S t r a t t o n was instructed t o get bids for a new engine, such a s was desired for t h e electrical l a b o r a t o r y , a n d t o report t h e same t o t h e Board a t its next regular meeting. On motion of Mr. Cobb, $500 was appropriated from t h e metallurgical l a b o r a t o r y fund for t h e purchase of mineralogical specimens, t h e a m o u n t t o be expended by t h e Business Agent and Professor Baldwin. On motion of Mr. Shawhan, $ 6 0 was appropriated from t h e U. S. fund for t h e purchase of tools for class use in t h e geology and mineralogy classes, t h e a m o u n t t o be expended by t h e Business Agent a n d Professor Rolfe. On motion of Mr. Cobb, i t was voted t h a t a p p r o p r i a t i o n s be made a s follows:
