To the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. GENTLEMEN: Your Committee on Buildings and Grounds, to which was referred the petition of the committee of the new literary society in the University, the Academy, for the use of the physical lecture room as a society hall, and for the proper fitting up of said room for t h a t purpose, after having had the same under consideration asks leave to report: That the use of the room he granted for the time requested. T h a t five dozen chairs be purchased, not exceeding one dollar each in cost. That the necessary matting for aisles be purchased, not exceeding forty dollars cost. If it be found t h a t more satisfactory arrangements for rooms may be made by the Faculty, t h a t the Faculty be authorized to do so, using the appropriations herein stated. MILITARY AFFAIRS.

To the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. GENTLEMEN: Your special committee on military affairs submits the following report: 1. Every male student shall study military tactics, and shall recite upon the same once a week until he passes two creditable term examinations; and every male student, not excused for physical disability, or other cause hereinafter specially provided, shall have military drill twice a week until he obtains six creditable term records. Those selected as officers shall continue the recitations as above daring their time of service. 2. The class room instruction and the drill practice shall begin for each student as soon as practicable after he enters the University; Provided, T h a t students in the preparatory classes carrying no freshman studies, and not expecting to matriculate during the year, shall not be thus enrolled. 3. Officers of the battalion shall be nominated by the professor in charge and confirmed by the Faculty. All students having passed two term examinations in class room military instruction, and having gained
