MINUTES APPROVED

The Secretary presented the minutes of the meeting of the Board on June 16, 1955, press proof copies of which had previously been sent to all members of the Board. On motion of Mr. Swain, these minutes were approved as printed on pages 369 to 435, inclusive. EXECUTIVE SESSION At this point an executive session was requested and ordered for the consideration of the following matters of business presented by the President of the University.

CONTROL SYSTEMS LABORATORY (28) T h e Control Systems Laboratory, established at the University of Illinois on February I, 1951, for research on specific projects for the armed forces of the United States, has from its inception been supported by various federal agencies. This research has been of a highly classified nature, and the Laboratory has been designated as "Urgent Defense." Since December 1, 1953, the Laboratory has operated on funds received under a contract with the Department of the Army Signal Corps. On request of the latter, the Director of the Control Systems Laboratory has prepared a proposal for continuation of this contract and financial support to the extent of $1,300,000 covering the period of December I, 1955, through November 30, 1956. This will reimburse the University for all direct and indirect costs. On the advice of the Dean of the College of Engineering, the Chairman of the University Research Board, and the Comptroller, I recommend continuation of the Control Systems Laboratory and that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute the necessary documents.

On motion of Mr. Herrick, authority was given as requested.

EQUIPMENT FOR CONTROL SYSTEMS LABORATORY (29) The Board has authorized a contract with the Office of Naval Research for a special purpose computer for use on certain of the classified research being carried on for the armed forces by _ the Control Systems Laboratory, and a subcontract with a vendor for the acquisition of the computer.
