OPENING MESSAGE Good m o r n i n g , ladies and gentlemen. It is my good fortune to p r e s i d e at the initiation of the m o r e f o r m a l p a r t of the F i r s t International Conference of Women E n g i n e e r s and S c i e n t i s t s . During the c o u r s e of the next s e v e r a l days, you will be officially welcomed by the Society of Women E n g i n e e r s , the City of New York, the State of New York, and the P r e s i d e n t of the United States of A m e r i c a . You have a l r e a d y been welcomed by the New York World's F a i r and by your hosts on the s e v e r a l t o u r s - - t h e International B u s i n e s s Machines R e s e a r c h Center, Consolidated E d i s o n ' s Atomic E n e r g y Plant, and the Bell Telephone L a b o r a t o r i e s . This is my p e r s o n a l welcome to you as Chairman of the Conference Operations C o m m i t t e e . I a m glad you a r e h e r e . I hope that this Conference will be a r e warding and h e a r t - w a r m i n g experience for each of you and that I can get to know you p e r s o n a l l y before it p a s s e s into h i s t o r y . As you have a l r e a d y been informed in the P r o g r a m and its P r e a m b l e , the f i r s t Session will develop the r e q u i r e m e n t s in scientific and technological manpower, and Sessions II, III and IV will e s t a b l i s h the types of talent needed in support of the s e v e r a l major a r e a s of basic human n e e d s . Session V will p r e s e n t an overview of the status of the w o r l d ' s supply of such talent, and Session VI will provide the opportunity for discussing how to develop scientific and engineering talent for the future. I urge you to p a r t i c i p a t e in these S e s s i o n s to your fullest capability.
