PAYMENT TO BOOZ, FRY, A L L E N , AND HAMILTON FOR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES (25) The firm of Booz, Fry, Allen, and Hamilton, of Chicago, which was engaged by authority of the Board of Trustees to make a survey of the business operations of the University of Illinois, has completed this survey, and the report thereon is now being studied by the President of the University prior to its submission with his recommendations to the Board of Trustees. Booz, Fry, Allen, and Hamilton have presented a statement for their services and expenses in making this survey in the amount of $20,000, and I submit this to the Board of Trustees for approval of payment. T h e instructions of the Board of Trustees in authorizing this survey were that its scope would be determined by the President of the University and that the report would be made to him for transmission, with such comments and recommendations as he wishes to make, to the Board of Trustees. It will take considerable time for me to study this report. The many recommendations must be carefully studied and analyzed, especially those involving numerous personnel changes and others involving capital expenditures, before I can transmit the report with my comments and advice. A preliminary examination of the report indicates: (1) that some recommendations are entirely acceptable, at least in principle; in fact, many of the recommendations are matters which have already been under consideration by the University in ihe past; (2). that some recommendations are worthy of serious consideration but require much further study; (3) that some are impossible or impracticable of fulfillment. It is essential that the comments and other recommendations of myself and other officers of the University be available to the Board at the same time it receives the report. In view of these facts, considerable time will be involved before I can transmit the report to the Board with my recommendations.

On motion of Mr. Davis, the payment of $20,000 to this firm for services and expenses was approved.

GIFTS AND GRANTS OF FUNDS (26) A report of the following gifts and grants of funds for various purposes received by the University since the last report:

1. W. K. Kellogg Foundation, Battle Creek, Michigan, $10,000 for scholarships to students in the College of Medicine, and $10,000 for scholarships to students in the College of Dentistry. 2. Mutual Benefit Hospital Fund, $2,000 to the McKinley Hospital for the purchase of supplies and equipment. 3. Mrs. Keith B. Pierce, $1 ,000 for the Phyllis Pierce Ruettinger scholarship fund. 4. Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers, $400 for their annual scholarship. 5. Anonymous, $728.56 for gifts for physically handicapped children. 6. Mr. George B. Griggs, associated with Naico of Chicago, an audiometer (valued at $300) for use in the Department of Laryngology, Rhinology, and Otology of the College of Medicine. 7. American Council of Learned Societies, $200 for a graduate fellowship in the Department of French. 8. Student Senate, $200 for the continuation of the annual undergraduate scholarship of $100 established by the Senate last year. 9. Ella Sachs Plotz Foundation, New York, $200 for the purchase of a
