JULIET E. K. WALKER, associate professor of history, for two semesters, to complete a book-length manuscript entitled Captive Capitalist: Antebellum Black Entreprenuers and Business Enterprise. STANLEY WASSERMAN, associate professor of psychology and of statistics, for one semester, to carry out research on the application of statistical methods for categorical data to the rapidly growing discipline of social network research. COLIN A. WRAIOHT, professor of physiology and biophysics and of plant biology, for one semester, to carry out research on a protein engineering approach to the photosynthetic reaction center. Beckman Associates The interim chancellor at Urbana also has recommended the appointment of the following faculty members as Beckman Associates, named for the donor of a gift which permits additional recognition for outstanding younger associate candidates who have already made distinctive scholarly contributions. CRAIO M. BETHKE, associate professor of geology, for two semesters, to carry out research on a new generation of quantitative models in hydrogeology. COSTAS N. PAPANICOLAS, associate professor of physics, for two semesters, to carry out experiments investigating the possibility that nucleons and deltas are deformed. THOMAS B. RAUCHFUSS, professor of chemistry, for two semesters, to write a monograph and carry out research on present and future metal sulfide chemistry. I concur in these recommendations. RUTH MASLOW LEWIS, anthropologist, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign — the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. GEORGE F.
