BOARD OF TRUSTEES

[October 23

O n motion of M r s . Busey, the President of the University was directed to inform the committee that the Davenport House is not for sale. At this point, M r s . Grigsby withdrew. CAHOKIA MOUNDS (21) Some weeks ago Professor Warren K. Moorehead, who directed for the University certain explorations of the Cahokia Mounds near East St. Louis, wrote me stating that the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad has bought land south of the main group of these mounds, including Mound 66. Professor Moorehead states that he and other authorities think this is an Indian burial mound and suggests that i f the Railroad intends to level this mound the University should endeavor to secure any relics that it m a y contain. Inasmuch as action m a y be taken suddenly and the University will lose this opportunity if it is not prepared, I request that the sum of $1,000 be appropriated from the Reserve and Contingent Fund to be expended under authority and direction of the President of the University for expenses connected with securing from Cahokia mound No. 66 such relics, photographs or other educational exhibits as may be possible under the circumstances, if the Railroad cuts into it.
