I92S] UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS BIDS ON BOOKSTACKS FOR N E W LIBRARY 383 (1) In accordance with the accompanying bids on bookstacks for the second unit of the Library, the Supervising Architect recommends acceptance of the bid of Snead and Company, of Jersey City, New Jersey, subject to certain deduction* within thirty days. I recommend approval. September 14, 1925 President David Kinley, J55 Administration Building Dear President Kinley: On the afternoon of September 12 with Mrs. Busey present were opened bids on the bookstacks necessary for the second unit of the New Library. Plans are now out for bids on the enclosing structure for these stacks. The bids received were as follows, the smallerfigurebeing a credit providing the shelving is omitted from the two lower decks: Snead & Co., Jersey City, N. J $167,209.00 $12,750.00 General Fireproofing Co., Youngstown Ohio. 182,149.35 11,628.00 Art Metal Co., Jamestown, N. Y 185,153.00 Library Bureau, Chicago 194,965.00 17,144.00 The cost of the enclosing building including heating, lighting, wiring, elevators, etc., will be about $125,000, making the total cost of this addition i we accept f the credit of $12,750 about $280,000 which will leave only $220,000 for the balance of the building which will not build quite as much space as we had hoped, but as the bookstacks are the essential feature I recommend that we award the contract for the stacks to Snead and Company on the basis of their bid subject to the deduction and with the privilege of making further deduction within 30 days by omitting further shelving i it seems wise to do so. f Yours truly, Jakes M. White Supervising Architect O n motion of M r . Trees, this recommendation was approved, subject to the approval of the Legal Counsel. BIDS ON ADDITION TO MEN'S GYMNASIUM (2) The two bids received on the addition to the Men's Gymnasium run well beyond the figure fixed for the general contract as shown in the accompanying schedule submitted by the Supervising Architect. Instead of readvertising for bids, I recommend that the Supervising Architect be authorized to ask the two bidders to refigure the job, the newfiguresto be submitted to the Board. O n motion of M r . W h a m , this recommendation w a s approved. BUILDING APPROPRIATIONS FOR THE BIENNIUM 1923-25 (3) A report of the Supervising Architect on the status of building appropriations for the biennium ending October 1, 1925. This report w a s received for record. A t this point, M r . Barr took his place with the Board. COLLEGE PLACE PROPERTY (4) The Superintendent of Business Operations reports that i i necessary t s for the University to purchase a strip of land 8.88 feet wide off of the south side of Lot 135 facing the Armory on Fourth Street. The owner, Mr. J. W . Swain, offers to s l this land for $650, providing the el University will assume 15 percent of the unpaid paving and lighting assessments and of any general taxes against the whole lot.
