BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Stadium will hold a meeting on Saturday, June 9, at 2:30 p. m., in the AlumniStadium offices in the Administration Building. The Building Committee of the Stadium has employed Mr. W . A. Slater, '06, of Washington, D. C , as Superintendent to represent the interests of the Committee, the Athletic Association and the University, at a monthly salary of $650. Mr. Slater reported for duty on April 15 and has been busy making certain tests and investigations since that time. One week after m y last report to you, I received from the architects an order slip for certain changes in the contract with the Sodemann Heat and Power Co., calling for a net addition to the contract of $834. This increase results from the decision of the Building Committee to change the kind of boilers used in the heating system. A contract has been signed by the University of Illinois Athletic Association per George Huff, President, with P. and F. Corbin of Chicago, for furnishing the finishing hardware required for completing the Stadium at a price of $7,541. In the general contract with English Brothers, provision was made for an allowance of #6,000 for this hardware and therefore the contract now let calls for an increase of $1,541 in the cost of the Stadium. Early in M a y a contract was entered into by the Athletic Association with Freeman and Sweet of Chicago, for the electrical wiring and other electrical work in the Stadium at a contract price of $20,256. The architects found, after they had awarded the original contract for the electrical work to A. H. Barth Electrical Co., of Springfield at a price of #14,998 as per m y report of January 5th, last, that this company was unable to give its bond or to undertake the performance of the contract which was therefore forfeited, I am advised. The letting of this contract therefore will result in an increase of #5,258 in the cost of the Stadium. Construction work has been greatly delayed during the spring months by frequent rains and unfavorable working conditions as a result thereof. I am told that all of the structural steel is on the ground and that practically all of the reinforcing bars have been delivered; that English Brothers have a large amount of cement stored ready for use at the Stadium; that two-thirds of the lumber for the construction of the seats has arrived; that the rough grading of the playing field is now almost complete and that it will soon be ready for the placing of the top soil and the placing of the drain tile under the playing field itself; that weather conditions permitting, the contractor will probably begin to pour by this week-end, the concrete for the first twenty-one rows of seats in the east stand. Members of the Building Committee are s i l of the opinion that the greater tl part of the Stadium seats can be finished within time for use for the Homecoming game on November 3. To accomplish this means that all of the contractors will have to work at high speed, under favorable conditions, between now and that time.
