Animal Research at the University
The University was first registered with the U. S. Department of Agriculture as a research facility on August 17, 1967 under the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act, Public Law 89-544. By 1968, animal research on the University was spread out across sixteen departments on campus, placing it in violation of the Act and the University was forced to request an extension from the Department of Agriculture to give it until 1971 to comply with its provisions. As a proposed solution to the animal housing problems on campus, the University proposed to construct a new 6,240 square foot Research Animal Holding Facility for $787,000. [1]
