On motion of Mrs. Watkins, these appointments were confirmed.

A P P O I N T M E N T O F P R O F E S S O R H E R B E R T E . CARTER A S PROFESSOR A N D HEAD OF T H E DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY A N D CHEMICAL ENGINEERING (3) Professor Roger Adams, distinguished Head of the Department of Chemistry since 1926, has asked to be relieved of his administrative duties as Head of the Department at the end of the current academic year and to be continued on the faculty as Research Professor. I recommend that his request be granted. The Executive Committee of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a special search committee have recommended the appointment of Professor H e r b e r t E. Carter, now Professor of Biochemistry, as Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering on indefinite tenure, beginning September I, 1954, at a salary of $14,000 an academic year. The recommendation has the support of the Provost, the Dean of the Graduate College, and the Dean-elect of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I concur.

On motion of Mrs. Watkins, this appointment was approved.

APPOINTMENT OF DR. REID T . MILNER AS PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF T H E DEPARTMENT OF FOOD TECHNOLOGY (4) The Dean of the College of Agriculture recommends the appointment of Dr. Reid T. Milner, now Director of the Northern Regional Research Laboratory at Peoria, Illinois, as Professor and Head of the Department of Food Technology on indefinite tenure, beginning April 19, 1954, at an annual salary of $12,000 ( A Y ) . T h e recommendation is concurred in by other University officers concerned. This appointment is to replace Dr. Louis B. H o w a r d who is now Associate Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station and who has asked to be relieved of the headship of the Department of Food Technology. I concur. O n m o t i o n of M r s . W a t k i n s , this a p p o i n t m e n t w a s a p p r o v e d . GEORGE A. MILLER E N D O W M E N T (5) Now that the net assets of the George A. Miller Estate are in the possession of the University and the funds have been invested by it, I recommend that Professor Miller's bequest be officially designated " T h e George A. Miller Endowment." A special faculty committee appointed for this purpose has been studying what use should be made of the income from this endowment. T h e committee has not completed its work but has agreed on one recommendation which I present to the Board with my approval: T h e r e is hereby established a George A. Miller Visiting Professorship to be filled annually from any field in which advanced work is given at the University. T h e Department of Mathematics shall be given priority in the selection of the first candidate for this position. T h e salary of this professorship shall not be fixed but shall be determined by the qualifications and professional standing of the candidate appointed. T h e first appointment shall be for the academic year 1954-1955.
