BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Funds are available in an appropriation made by the Board of Trustees on January 21, 1953, to be supplemented by the request for a $3,000 additional appropriation being presented separately at this meeting. I concur and recommend that the Acting Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute this contract.

On motion of Mrs. Holt, this contract was awarded and authority was given as recommended.

GIFT OF PAINTING FROM MR. A N D MRS. MERLE J . TREES

(12) Mr. and Mrs. Merle J. Trees of Chicago offer the University, through the University of Illinois Foundation, a painting by Frans Hals, "Portrait of Cornelis Guldewagen, Mayor of Haarlem," as their 1953 contribution to the "Emily Nichols Trees (Class of 1905) and Merle Jay Trees (Class of 1907) Collection" of paintings at the University of Illinois. The Art Institute of Chicago has appraised this painting, in terms of present market values, at $45,000. I heartily recommend that this gift be accepted and that the Secretary be instructed to send Mr. and Mrs. Trees a formal expression of appreciation on behalf of the Board of Trustees. O n motion of Mr. Johnston, this offer was accepted and the Secretary of the Board was instructed to send M r . and M r s . Trees a suitable formal expression of appreciation.
