INTERNAL BUDGET OF ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION FOR 1 9 5 0 - 1 9 5 1 (2) The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics submits, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Athletic Association, the budget of the Association for 1950-1951 which is summarized as follows with comparative figures for the preceding year: 1949-195° iQSo-WS1 Original RevisedEstimate Estimate Proposed Income $754 100 $755 307 $768 800 Expenditures: Budget Appropriations 739 199 738 249 758 406 Special Appropriations 67 7601 Total (739 199) (806 009) (758 406) Excess of income over expenditures $14 901 $ — 50 702 $10 394 On July 1, 1049, the Athletic Association had a net operating surplus of $147,877. It is estimated that on June 30, 1950, the operating surplus will be $48,767. T h e budget has been examined by the Provost and the Comptroller; those salaries paid jointly by the Athletic Association and the School of Physical Education have been approved by the Director of the School of Physical Education. The budget includes a provision of $10,394 to be allocated by the Board of Directors for contingency expenditures not to exceed $1,000 for any one item. I recommend that this budget be approved and that the President of the University be authorized to make such changes and adjustments, including approval of new appointments and acceptances of resignations, as are necessary and recommended by the Board of Directors of the Athletic Association within the total income realized. HUELSTER AS HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT O F PHYSICAL EDUCATION FOR W O M E N (3) T h e Director of the School of Physical Education recommends the appointment of Dr. Laura J. Huelster, now Associate Professor and Acting Head of the Department of Physical Education for Women, as Associate Professor and H e a d of the Department on indefinite tenure beginning September I, 1950, at an annual salary of $6,500, services to be required during the two semesters of the regular academic year. I concur in this recommendation.

On motion of Mrs. Holt, this appointment was made as recommended.

APPOINTMENT O F C. J . BIRKELAND AS HEAD O F THE DEPARTMENT OF H O R T I C U L T U R E (4) T h e Dean of the College of Agriculture and Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station recommends the appointment of Dr. C. J. Birkeland, now Acting Head of the Department of Horticulture, as Professor and Head of the Department of Horticulture on indefinite tenure effective September I, 1950, at a salary of $9,000 a year on a twelve months' basis. The Secretary reported that the President has approved the following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees:
