Recording Stenographer DEFINITION: Under supervision, and on call, to perform stenographic duties for University departments requiring ability to make and to transcribe verbatim reports and to use mechanical devices in connection with this work. D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE : To take and to transcribe verbatim records of conferences, hearings, interviews, lectures, and speeches, which may involve technical and varied vocabulary; perform stenographic services for University departments as requested; transcribe from tape and wire recorders and from recording disks; perform related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation; business education preferable; at least three years of stenographic experience, the principal duty of which was to take verbatim dictation involving difficult and varied vocabulary; extensive knowledge of shorthand, stenotype, or other method of taking dictation; ability to take sustained dictation at a high rate of speed; ability to transcribe rapidly and accurately; good health; minimum age twenty-one. Mechanical Construction Superintendent DEFINITION: Under administrative supervision, t o be responsible for the direction, inspection, and supervision of the work of contractors on major University mechanical construction projects, including power plant, steam distribution, and building heating, ventilating, and refrigeration systems. D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE: T O direct, inspect, and supervise work being done by contractors on mechanical installations for new buildings, power plant and steam distribution additions, and on building remodeling projects; direct field performance tests; interpret architects' and engineers' drawings and specifications; act as liaison between contractors, architects, engineers, and the University; maintain progress records and reports of work in process; check, verify, and process contractors' requests for payments; perform related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Extensive and progressive practical experience in responsible charge, including direction, inspection, and supervision of the mechanical equipment installations and heavy masonry erection; University graduation in mechanical engineering preferred; high school graduation acceptable with exceptional practical training and experience in the above work; ability to coordinate work of contractors; thorough knowledge of construction, materials, procedures, and acceptable practices; good physical condition; minimum age thirty. Personnel Technician DEFINITION: Under administrative direction, to work with much independence in responsible personnel work, involving special technical and limited supervisory duties. D U T I E S BY EXAMPLE: T O prepare examination formats, develop examination questions, perform necessary statistical analyses of examination results; act as monitors in the holding of examinations, assist and supervise in grading of examinations and preparation of registers; assist in position classification studies; make recommendations relating to classification studies or to allocation of individual positions; confer with departmental officials and make independent desk audits in various departments; identify job elements, and analyze the duties of positions into major elements; make organization and methods studies to ascertain the needs of departments for new personnel, reduction of personnel, and reclassification of existing personnel; give advice and assist unit training supervisors with an organized inservice training program; prepare methods for presenting training material in the form of visual aids, manuals, and bulletins; perform various tasks in assembling and preparing examinations, do research in testing, evaluation of quality of experience and training, classification, oral interviews, and rating schedules; do research in unassembled examinations for classifications of higher levels by making studies of standards to be used, methods of evaluating education, training and experience, and establishing necessary rating schedules; perform related work as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: University graduation, with training in personnel work desirable; working knowledge of methods and techniques of examination, in-service training, service rating methods, or position classification; working knowledge of institutional organization and the types and essential aspects of a wide variety of positions common in public organization; familiarity with day-to-day departmental operating problems in institutional organization; experience in technical personnel work desirable; good judgment; minimum age twenty-one.
