The Secretary presented the minutes of the meetings of March 12-13, 1951, press proof copies of which had been sent to all members of the Board in advance. On motion of Mr. Nickell, the minutes were approved as printed on pages 599 to 647, inclusive.

BUSINESS PRESENTED BY T H E PRESIDENT OF T H E UNIVERSITY

The Board considered the following recommendations and reports presented by President Stoddard.

APPOINTMENTS TO T H E 1 9 5 1 SUMMER SESSION STAFF

( i ) I submit the budget for the 1951 Summer Session. It provides for an eight weeks' session at Urbana-Champaign and at the Chicago Undergraduate Division, and for a small amount of instruction at the Chicago Professional Colleges. Salaries of all members of the faculty who are recommended for appointments to the Summer Session staff are computed on the basis of two-ninths of the salary of the academic year for two months of summer service in accordance with the terms of employment of the academic staff authorized by the Board of Trustees. The budget totals $515,000 for Urbana-Champaign, including a reserve of approximately $15,000 to be assigned by the Dean of the Summer Session in terms of enrollment demands, $00,189 for the Chicago Undergraduate Division, and $1,128 for the Chicago Professional Colleges. I recommend that the appointments to the Summer Session staff and the allocation for unassigned salaries be approved as submitted and that the President of the University be authorized to make such changes and adjustments, including additional appointments and acceptance of resignations, as are necessary in accordance with the needs of the University. On motion of Mr. Megran, these recommendations and appointments as listed below were approved by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Fornof, Mr. Grange, Mr. Herrick, Mrs. Holt, Mr. Johnston, Mr. Livingston, Mr. Megran, Mr. Nickell, Mrs. Watkins; no, none; absent, Mr. Hickman, Mr. Stevenson.
