BOARD OF TRUSTEES

[June 19

BUSINESS PRESENTED BY T H E PRESIDENT O F T H E UNIVERSITY

The Board considered the following reports and recommendations from the President of the University.

APPOINTMENT O F RICHARD J . WINZLER AS HEAD O F T H E DEPARTMENT O F BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY (1) T h e Dean of the College of Medicine and the Vice-President in charge of the Chicago Professional Colleges recommend the appointment of Dr. Richard J. Winzler, Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, as Professor and Head of the Department of Biological Chemistry in the College of Medicine on indefinite tenure beginning July 1, 1952, at an annual salary of $11,506 ( A Y ) . This is to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Dr. Otto A. Bessey. Associate Professor S. B. Binkley has been serving as Acting Head of the Department. I concur. O n motion of M r . J o h n s t o n , this a p p o i n t m e n t w a s a p p r o v e d . APPOINTMENT O F MIODRAG MUNTYAN AS DIRECTOR OF T H E UNIVERSITY PRESS (2) The directorship of the University Press has been a part-time position since it was established in 1918. Mr. H . E. Cunningham, the first Director, served also as Secretary of the Board of Trustees. T h e present Director, Dr. Wilbur Schramm, is also Dean of the Division of Communications and Research Professor of Journalism and Communications. Dean Schramm advises me that it has become increasingly clear that for the best interests of the University and of the Press, it should have a full-time head with full responsibility and authority. His judgment has been confirmed by other members of the faculty whose administrative and research responsibilities have close relationships with the functions of the Press. Dean Schramm has asked to be relieved of his duties as Director of the University Press, effective on the appointment of a successor. Accordingly, I recommend the appointment of Mr. Miodrag Muntyan, now Executive Editor (with the rank of Assistant Professor) of the University Press, as Director (with the rank of Assistant Professor), effective July 1, 1952, at an annual salary of $8,000 on a Y basis. H e has been a member of the University Press staff since 1933, starting as a part-time editorial assistant, and has grown with it. H e is highly regarded in the university publishing field not only by members of the University of Illinois faculty but by executives of other university presses. O n m o t i o n of M r . N i c k e l l , t h i s a p p o i n t m e n t w a s a p p r o v e d . APPOINTMENTS TO T H E FACULTY (3) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1. GEORGE E. ANNER, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, beginning September I, 1952, at an annual salary of $5,750 ( A ) . 2. SAMUEL M.
