most terrible of military conflicts. The University is proud of the record of the more than 20,276 alumni who served in the armed forces on land, on the sea, and in the air. Likewise the University is proud of the record of the 600 members of the faculty and staff who also served m the armed forces or contributed through scientific and technical services to the winning of the war. We owe an everlasting debt of gratitude to all the men and women who served in the armed forces of our country, but above all we honor those who gave their lives and who will not share in the victory their supreme sacrifices made possible. In discharging our sacred duty to them, we must establish and preserve a permanent world peace so that their sacrifices shall not have been in vain 1
