APPOINTMENTS TO THE FACULTY MADE BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY

The Secretary reported that the President has approved the following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees:

1. W . W. CHARTERS, JR., Assistant Professor in the Bureau of Research and Service, beginning February 1, 1950, at an annual salary of $4,800. 2. BENJAMIN B. FREUD, Visiting Professor of Physical Sciences, beginning September I, 1949, at an annual salary of $6,000. 3. ROBERT K. L I M , Visiting Research Professor of Clinical Science, beginning September 1, 1949, at an annual salary of $1,260. 4. CHRISTOFFER OKTEDAHL, Visiting Assistant Professor of Geology, beginning February I, 1950, at an annual salary of $5,300. 5. W I L L I S A. WOOD, Assistant Professor of Dairy Bacteriology, beginning February I, 1950, at an annual salary of $5,200.

On motion of Mr. Herrick, these appointments were confirmed.

MATTERS PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT STODDARD

The Board considered in executive session the following matters presented by the President of the University.

CONTRACTS FOR ADDITION TO RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL HOSPITALS (1) Bids have been received on the construction of, and on some of the equipment (kitchen and cafeteria) for, the addition to the Research and Educational Hospitals in Chicago. These bids are on the first construction phase; the second phase will include the remodeling and alterations necessary in the present building as a result of the new addition. The Director of the Physical Plant and the Comptroller recommend the award of contracts as follows: General w o r k — Patrick W a r r e n Company, Chicago $2 976 600 00 Electrical work — Wadeford Electric Company, Chicago 540 928 00 Paging and intercommunication systems — Boom Electric Company, Chicago 8 716 00 Plumbing work — Economy Plumbing and Heating, Chicago 331 900 00 Heating and refrigeration work — M. J. Corboy Company, Chicago 686 695 00 Ventilation work — Bloomer Heating and Ventilating Company, Chicago 261 605 00 Pipe covering— Standard Asbestos, Chicago 233 060 00 Pneumatic tubes — Lamson Corporation, Chicago 53 738 38 Elevators and dumbwaiters — Otis Elevator Company, Chicago 275 386 00 Total, Construction $5 368 628 38 Kitchen and cafeteria equipment — Stearns Company, Chicago 244 181 00 Total, Awards Recommended $5 612 809 38 Funds are available in the State appropriation to the University for 1949-1951 for "Construction of Addition to Present Hospital." Schedules of bids are herewith given to the Secretary for his files. I recommend that these contracts be awarded subject to the release of funds by the Governor, and that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute the contracts.

During the presentation of this matter, Mr. E. L. Stouffer, Architect, Messrs. William Holabird and J. Z. Burgee, of the firm of Holabird and Root and Burgee, and Mr. Harry Pearce, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds for the Chicago Colleges, were present. After discussion, and on motion of Mr. Livingston, contracts were awarded and authority to execute contracts was given as recommended.
