BOARD OF T R U S T E E S

These proposed improvements have been carefully studied by the Committee on Special Appropriations and Nonrecurring Expenditures. Its reports giving details of the reasons for these improvements are submitted herewith. I concur and recommend that these appropriations be made from the 1948-1049 General Reserve Fund to the extent that funds are available therein and the remainder from the General Reserve Fund from 1949-1950, and that all of these appropriations be made available until June 30, 1950.

On motion of Mr. Livingston, these appropriations were made as recommended, by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Fornof, Mr. Herrick, Mr. Hickman, Mrs. Holt, Mr. Livingston, Mr. McLaughlin, Mr. Nickell, Mrs. Watkins, Mr. Williamson; no, none; absent, Dr. Meyer, Mr. Stevenson.

CHANGES IN CIVIL SERVICE CLASS SPECIFICATIONS AND SALARY RANGES (12) T h e Director of Nonacademic Personnel recommends the following changes in University Civil Service positions, to become effective July 1, 1949: (1) deletions from class specifications; (2) additions to class specifications; (3) changes in existing class specifications; and (4) changes in salary ranges of existing class specifications. These changes are shown in detail in the accompanying schedules and they have previously been submitted to the Committee on Civil Service and Employees for study in advance of the Board Meeting. A copy is filed in the office of the Secretary of the Board. I concur in the Director's recommendations.

On motion of Mr. Herrick, these changes in class specifications and salary ranges were approved.

APPOINTMENTS TO T H E FACULTY MADE BY THE PRESIDENT OF T H E UNIVERSITY (13) The Secretary has reported that the President has approved the following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees: 1. W A Y N E MELVILLE BEVER, Associate Professor of Crop Pathology, on onefifth time, beginning July 1, 1949, at an annual salary of $1,005. 2. GORDON W . BINKERD, Assistant Professor of Music, beginning September I, 1949, at an annual salary of $4,300. 3. ROBERT CAMPBELL, Assistant Professor of Economics, beginning September 1, 1949, at an annual salary of $4,500. 4. HERMAN CHERNOEF, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, beginning September 1, 1949, at an annual salary of $4,500. 5. THOMAS L. GRISAMORE, Assistant Professor of Hygiene and Medical Adviser for Men, in the Undergraduate Division in Chicago, on one-half time, beginning July I, 1049, at an annual salary of $3,500. 6. LEONID HURWICZ, Research Professor of Economics and Mathematical Statistics, beginning September I, 1949, at an annual salary of $7,850. 7. WILLIBALD KARL JENTSCHKE, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering, beginning March 16, 1949, without salary. 8. MARTHA S U E LEWANDOSKI, Assistant Professor of Hygiene and Medical Adviser for Women, beginning June 1, 1949, at an annual salary of $5,000. 9. JAMES HARRY POTTER, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, beginning July I, 1949, at an annual salary of $6,200. 10. SOL SPIEGELMAN, Research Professor of Bacteriology, beginning July 1, 1949, at an annual salary of $7,500. 11. PETER NICHOLAS VUKASIN, Assistant Professor of Economics, beginning September I, 1949, at an annual salary of $4,500.
