necessary to use part of the small surplus previously accumulated. The Director of Admissions recommends the following rates in this schedule effective July I, 1949'High-school subjects $1 25 per half unit of credit College subjects 2 50 per subject On the basis of the present number of individuals taking the examinations, the schedule of fees proposed would produce an income of about $19,000 a year and the expense of giving the examinations is about $17,000 a year. Thus the fees proposed include a safety factor to allow for shrinkage in the number of examination applicants and for possible increase in expenditures not now anticipated. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Nickell, these rates were approved as recommended.

PURCHASES (11) There are submitted reports of ( A ) emergency purchases authorized and of ( B ) purchases recommended (see Appendix, page 392).

On motion of Mr. McLaughlin, the action of the President of the University in authorizing emergency purchases was approved and confirmed, and the purchases recommended were authorized.

G R A N T OF FUNDS FOR SEMINAR O N THE ATLANTIC PACT

(12) At the meeting of the Board on April 21, 1949, I reported informally that the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace was considering a grant of funds to the University toward the expenses of a seminar on the Atlantic Pact to be held at Allerton Park during the summer of 1949- I am pleased to report that a grant of $2,000 has been offered and has been accepted. T h e seminar will be conducted by the Institute of Government and Public Affairs, July 13-16. I request that the Board of Trustees, through its Secretary, express to Dr. James T . Shotwell, Acting President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, an official recognition of this grant.

On motion of Mr. Nickell, the Secretary was instructed to send such expression to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

DEPARTMENT OF BACTERIOLOGY IN T H E COLLEGE OF MEDICINE (13) The Dean of the College of Medicine and the Vice-President in charge of the Chicago Professional Colleges recommend that the name of the Department of Bacteriology and Public Health in the College of Medicine be changed to the Department of Bacteriology. I concur.

On motion of Mrs. Holt, this change was made as recommended.

NAMING OF N E W UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS (14) I recommend that the new University buildings recently completed or now under construction at Urbana-Champaign be named as follows: Electrical Engineering Building Mechanical Engineering Building East Chemistry Building Lincoln Avenue Residence

On motion of Mr. Nickell, these names of buildings were approved.

COMPTROLLER'S REPORT OF CONTRACTS (15) The Comptroller's report of contracts executed from April II to May 10, 1049 (see Appendix, page 395).

QUARTERLY REPORT OF THE COMPTROLLER (16) The Comptroller presents his quarterly report to the Board as of March 31, 1049. Copies of this report have been sent to all members of the Board in advance of this meeting.
