AWARD OF CONTRACT FOR FIRE PROTECTION FACILITIES (7) The following bids were received on the installation of a new fire alarm system at Urbana-Champaign: Hecker & Company, Inc., Chicago $32 632 Kil-Bar Electric Company, Chicago 28 565 These bids are on the installation of a distribution system and branch connections to ten buildings. The Director of the Physical Plant Department and the Comptroller recommend award of a contract to the Kil-Bar Electric Company, the lower bidder. Funds are available in the State appropriation for "Construction of fire protection facilities" to cover this installation with the exception of connections to the Illini Union Coffee House ($140), the Men's Residence Halls ($185), and the Military Stables ($125), which will be financed from current operating funds for these buildings. I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute a contract with the Kil-Bar Electric Company in the amount of $28,565. O n m o t i o n of M r . N i c k e l l , t h i s c o n t r a c t w a s a u t h o r i z e d a s r e c o m mended. ADDITION TO CONTRACT FOR GENERAL WORK ON PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT UNIT IN THE RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL HOSPITALS (8) The Director of the Physical Plant Department and the Comptroller recommend an increase of $2,838.20 in the general contract with the E. H . Marhoefer, Jr., Company of Chicago, Illinois, for the construction of the Physical Environment Unit in the Research and Educational Hospitals to cover mstallation of laboratory equipment. Funds are available in the State appropriation for the "Construction of addition to present Hospital Building for Research in Physical Environment." I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute this addition to the contract.

On motion of Mr. Davis, this addition to contract was authorized as recommended.

PURCHASES (9) The Director of Purchases has proposed and the Comptroller recommends the following purchases. Unless otherwise specified, the purchase in each case is recommended on the basis of lowest bid (see Appendix, page 183). O n m o t i o n of M r . L i v i n g s t o n , t h e s e p u r c h a s e s w e r e a u t h o r i z e d a s r e c o m m e n d e d , a n d t h e a c t i o n of t h e P r e s i d e n t of t h e U n i v e r s i t y in authorizing emergency purchases w a s approved and confirmed. COMPTROLLER'S REPORT OF CONTRACTS (10) The Comptroller's report of contracts executed from September 11 to October 10, 1948 (see Appendix, page 185). T h i s r e p o r t w a s r e c e i v e d for r e c o r d . INCREASE IN CONTRACT FOR PRINTING SPECIALIZED PUBLICATIONS (11) On June 30, 1945 (Minutes, page 519), the Board of Trustees approved an increase in the rates of the contract with the George Banta Publishing Company, Menasha, Wisconsin. This company has printed The Journal of English and Germanic Philology for thirty-five years. The company specializes in the particular type of printing required for this publication and has provided the University with first class service and high-grade printing. The present contract provides that either party may terminate the contract by a ninety days' notice to the other party. The George Banta Publishing Company has submitted a revised price schedule to be effective October 1, 1948, which
