BOARD OF T R U S T E E S

[April 19

O P E N SESSION After luncheon, the Board convened in open session.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE FACULTY MADE BY THE PRESIDENT OF T H E UNIVERSITY

The Secretary reported that the President has approved the following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees:

1. H . W . DOWLING, Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and Head of the Department, beginning June 1, 1950, at an annual salary of $12,000. 2. I. C. GUNSALUS, Professor of Bacteriology, beginning September 1, 1950, at an annual salary of $9,500. 3. CHARLES A. HICKMAN, Professor of Economics, and Research Professor of Economics, beginning September 1, 1950, at an annual salary of $8,500. 4. ROBERT M. KARK, Professor of Medicine, beginning July 1, 1950, at an annual salary of $10,000. 5. S. E. LURIA, Research Professor of Bacteriology, beginning September 1, 1950, at an annual salary of $8,000. 6. CHARLES L. MAXWELL, Assistant Professor of Hygiene, and Medical Adviser for Men, beginning July 1, 1950, at an annual salary of $7,200. 7. ALVIN L. NEUMANN, Associate Professor of Animal Science, beginning July I, 1950, at an annual salary of $6,200. 8. HORACE W . NORTON, Professor of Agricultural Statistics, beginning September I, 1950, at an annual salary of $8,000. 9. FREDERICK SARGENT, II, Assistant Professor of Physiology, beginning September 1, 1950, at an annual salary of $4,500. 10. WILLIAM W . WAINWRIGHT, Professor of Radiology, and Head of the Department, beginning September I, 1950, at an annual salary of $8,000.

On motion of Dr. Meyer, these appointments were confirmed.

MATTERS PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT STODDARD

The Board considered the following matters presented by the President of the University.

APPOINTMENT OF W . ELLISON CHALMERS AS DIRECTOR O F THE INSTITUTE OF LABOR A N D INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS (1) I recommend that Dr. W . Ellison Chalmers, Professor of Economics and Professor in the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations, who has been serving as Acting Director of the Institute since September I, 1949, be appointed Director of the Institute at a total salary of $9,500, service to be on a twelve months' or "Y" basis. Under University Statutes a dean or director is appointed for a term of two years. Professor Chalmers' present appointment as Acting Director will expire September I, 1950. I recommend that the change in title to Director and the new salary become effective as of May 1, 1950.

On motion of Dr. Meyer, this appointment was made as recommended.

APPOINTMENT O F MARK H. HINDSLEY AS DIRECTOR O F THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS BANDS (2) The University of Illinois Bands have been an independent organization, the Director reporting to the President of the University. For administrative purposes the Bands should be attached to one of the major divisions of the University. I recommend that they be placed under the general supervision of the Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts. I recommend further that Associate Professor Mark H . Hindsley,. who has been serving as Acting Director of the Bands since September 1, 1948, when Director A. A. Harding retired, be appointed Director of the University of Illinois Bands and Professor in the School of Music, effective May 1, 1950, at a total salary of $8,500.
