254 BOARD OF TRUSTEES [February 27 MEETING O F T H E EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE FEBRUARY 27, 1947 The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois met on Thursday, February 27, 1947, at the Blackstone Hotel, in Chicago, during the recess of the meeting of the Board on the same day. Mr. Park Livingston, Chairman, and Dr. Karl A. Meyer, member of the Executive Committee, were present; also the members and officers of the Board and the officials of the University enumerated above. MATTERS PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT STODDARD The Board considered the following matters presented by the President of the University. CHANGES IN ACADEMIC RANKS OF ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION STAFF (1) At the request of Professor Seward C. Staley, Director of the School of Physical Education, I recommend the following promotions in academic ranks of members of the staff of the Athletic Association who are also members of the University faculty, effective September 1, 1947: DOUGLAS R. MILLS, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Head Basketball Coach, and Assistant Professor of Physical Education, to the rank of Professor on indefinite tenure. RAYMOND ELIOT, Head Football Coach and Assistant Professor of Physical Education, to the rank of Associate Professor on indefinite tenure. WALTER H . ROETTGEK, Head Baseball Coach, Assistant Basketball Coach, and Assistant Professor of Physical Education, to the rank of Associate Professor on indefinite tenure. BURTON A. INGWERSEN, Assistant Football Coach and Instructor in Physical Education, to the rank of Associate Professor on indefinite tenure. LEO T. JOHNSON, Head Track Coach, Assistant Football Coach, and Associate in Physical Education, to the rank of Assistant Professor for two years from September I, 1047. T h e University of Illinois Statutes provide that an appointment as professor or as associate professor shall be for an indefinite t e r m ; provided, however, that when a person's first appointment in this University is to a professorship, or an associate professorship, such appointment may be for any limited term, but a reappointment following shall be for an indefinite term. Appointments below the rank of associate professor shall be made for a definite term. It is customary to make appointments to the rank of assistant professor for one or two years to coincide with the fiscal biennia. On motion of Dr. Meyer, these appointments were approved as recommended. ADJUSTMENTS IN SALARIES OF ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION STAFF (2) T h e Board of Directors of the Athletic Association has authorized the following new schedule of salaries for members of the Athletic Association staff effective March 1, 1947, subject to approval by the Board of Trustees: DOUGLAS R.
