Professor Landis will replace Professor Leslie E. Card, who has been on the Board of Directors since July 22, 1941. Mr. Peterson will replace Mr. Lowell Spurgeon, who has been on the Board of Directors since March, 1943.

On motion of Mr. Williamson, these appointments were made as recommended.

MATHEWS, Professor of Political Science, second semester The programs of research, study, and travel for which these leaves are being requested have been examined by the University Research Board which advises the President in such matters. T h e Research Board's report to the President includes a supporting evaluation of the program in terms of benefits to the University and to the individual in each specific case recommended. While the number of sabbatical leaves being recommended for 1948-1949 may seem large, it should be remembered that relatively few sabbatical leaves were requested and granted during World W a r I I , so that there is an accumulation
