HARPER, GEORGE W., Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering ( S ) —leave of absence without pay beginning March I, 1956, and continuing through August 31, 1956, so that he may accept the position of Superintendent of Safety Education and Inspection in the Department of Labor. HELLER, ALEX, Assistant Professor of Mathematics — leave of absence without pay beginning March I and continuing through August 31, 1956, in order that he may accept an award from the Alfred P . Sloan Foundation for research at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey. POWERS, M R S . PRUDENCE T., Research Assistant in Dermatology (Medicine) — leave of absence without pay for seven months beginning February I, 1956. RAUSHENBERGER, JOHN, Assistant Professor of A r t — leave of absence with full pay from December 9, 1955, until February 9, 1956, on account of illness. RYWLIN, ARKADI, Clinical Instructor in Pathology (Medicine) —leave of absence for military service, without pay, beginning December 1, 1955, and continuing through August 31, 1956. SMITH, ROLAND M., Professor of English — leave of absence with full pay from November 5 through December IS, 1955, on account of illness. STEWARD, JULIAN H., Research Professor of Anthropology — leave of absence without pay for six months from March I, 1956, so that he may participate in the American Studies Seminar at the Universities of Kyoto and Doshisha in Japan, and to serve as director of the Center for American Studies. STONE, ROBERT, Assistant in English — leave of absence without pay from December 14, 1955, through January 31, 1956, on account of illness. TURQUETTE, ATWELL R., Prof essor of Philosophy — leave of absence without pay for six months from March I, 1956, so that he may accept an invitation from the University of Texas to be a Visiting Professor of Philosophy during that period. FEBRUARY MEETING On motion of M r . Swain, the F e b r u a r y meeting w a s set for 11:00 a.m., F e b r u a r y 2 1 , 1956, t o be held in Chicago, Illinois. PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE President M e g r a n announced that h e will be out of t h e state from F e b r u a r y 8 until M a r c h 22, 1956, a n d asked t h e Board to elect a Presirent Pro Tempore t o serve during his absence. M r . Swain nominated M r . Johnston. O n motion of M r . Williamson, the nominations were closed a n d Mr. Johnston was elected President Pro Tempore of t h e Board of Trustees to serve d u r i n g t h e absence of President M e g r a n . ADDRESS BY DEAN FREDERICK T . WALL At this point President Henry introduced Dr. Frederick T. Wall, Research Professor of Physical Chemistry, Dean of the Graduate College, and Chairman of the University Research Board, who addressed the Board of Trustees on the state of the Graduate College and the functions of the Research Board. On motion of Mrs. Watkins, the Board adjourned.
