QUARTERLY REPORT OF THE COMPTROLLER (21) The Comptroller presents his quarterly report to the Board of Trustees as of June 30, 1955.

This report was received for record and a copy has been filed with the Secretary of the Board.

HEADSHIP OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING (22) The Dean of the College of Engineering recommends the appointment of Dr. Nathan M. Newmark, presently Research Professor of Structural Engineering and Chairman of the Digital Computer Laboratory, as Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering on indefinite tenure beginning September 1, 1956, at an annual salary of $16,000 on "A" basis. This appointment is to replace Professor Whitney C. Huntington who will retire at the end of the current academic year. Professor Newmark was unanimously recommended for this appointment by a special advisory committee of the faculty, and the nomination was made by the Dean after consultation with all members of the Department of professorial rank and with the heads of all other departments in the College. The appointment is endorsed by the Dean of the Graduate College and the Provost. I am pleased to recommend this appointment.

On motion of Mr. Williamson, this appointment was approved.

CONTRACT FOR ARCHITECTURAL SERVICES AT THE CHICAGO PROFESSIONAL COLLEGES (23) The Director of the Physical Plant and the Comptroller recommend the award of a contract with Pace Associates, Chicago, for architectural services consisting of the preparation of working drawings and specifications on remodeling of space in the Research and Educational Hospitals and in the DentistryMedicine-Pharmacy Building which is being vacated as a result of the relocation of departments and functions in the addition to the hospitals. The Building Committee at the Chicago Professional Colleges has approved a number of remodeling projects which could be completed during the current biennium at a total cost of approximately $1,450,000, of which $820,000 would be work to be contracted, if funds were available. Pace Associates prepared the preliminary drawings required to estimate the cost of these projects. The details of the proposal and contract are: a. Cost of services for the preparation of working drawings and specifications based on actual time devoted to a project at the following rates: Architectural Planner $6.00 per hour Senior Architectural Draftsman $3.00 to $4.00 per hour Structural Engineer or Mechanical Engineer or Electrical Engineering Designer $3.50 to $4.00 per hour
