I concur. O n m o t i o n of M r . M c L a u g h l i n , t h e s e c e r t i f i c a t e s w e r e a w a r d e d a s recommended. VETERANS HOSPITAL IN T H E MEDICAL CENTER DISTRICT (3) T h e Executive Dean of the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy reports that the Veterans Administration has recommended establishing a Veterans Hospital in t h e Medical Center District of Chicago. T h e proposal is pending before t h e Federal Board of Hospitalization which makes recommendations to the President of the United States. Close cooperation with the University of Illinois and the Medical Center Commission is contemplated by officials of the Veterans Administration. According to present plans t h e University of Illinois would have the responsibility for recommending appointments to t h e professional staff and to the resident staff of the hospital. T h e University would have full responsibility for the hospital service and residency training programs, and also for research projects at the hospital. I t is not contemplated that the Veterans Hospital would provide facilities for the undergraduate teaching program of t h e College of Medicine, but the establishment of a graduate training program at t h e residency level is contemplated and is highly desirable t o both agencies. T h e University would not assume any financial responsibility for the operation of the hospital or salaries of its personnel. T h e intent of the program is to raise the quality of professional medical service to veterans to the same high level of excellence of the best of civilian hospitals. In such a program the influence and help of medical schools is of great importance. T h e University of Illinois College of Medicine has given every possible aid and encouragement to the Surgeon General of the Veterans Administration and has cooperated fully with the Northwestern University Medical School in implementing the current program at Hines Hospital. T h e proposal for the construction of a Veterans Hospital in t h e Medical Center District was initiated by the Medical Center Commission with the support of the University of Illinois. This is being submitted for the information of the Board of Trustees, and no action by t h e Board at present is indicated.

This report was received for record.
